During the battle at Fort Moultrie, the fort was protected by sabal palmetto tree logs, which lined the walls of the fort. The strength of the trees saved countless lives as the British attacked the fort with cannon balls. The crescent moon however, has been recognized in two ways; originating during the Revolutionary War, the South Carolina soldiers wore a white-silver crescent on their caps. Also, the crescent has been referred to as the breastplate from a Revolutionary War uniform. Our state flag represents saving Charleston, South Carolina, from conquest for four years. The flag came to be the symbol of the Revolution, and liberty, in the state and the new nation.
